Registering a Company With CIPC: A Practical Checklist

Registering a company in South Africa is handled by the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC). The process is mostly online, but it helps to have everything ready before you start.

Before You Apply

Gather the basics first so the application goes smoothly.

What you’ll typically need

  • Proposed company name (and a back-up or two)
  • Details and ID documents for each director
  • Registered address for the company
  • Share details for the incorporators

After Registration

Once your company is registered, the work isn’t quite done. You’ll want to set up tax registrations with SARS, open a business bank account and start keeping proper records from day one. Depending on your turnover and activities, you may also need to register for VAT.

Don’t forget privacy obligations. Under POPIA, you’re responsible for how you collect and store personal information about customers and staff.

“A company that starts with clean records stays a company with clean records.”

BizHub can track formation steps as tasks, keep your directors and shareholders in a register and store your registration documents alongside the company. Always confirm the current requirements with CIPC and SARS.
